

Since the pandemic started, media has been awash with news of corruption, theft and mismanagement of funds as governments responded to Covid-19. The day shall serve as a basis for all anti-corruption stakeholders to reflect and dialogue on the strategies and mechanisms taken on the transparency in management of Covid-19 funds. This year will mark the sixth edition of the African Anti-Corruption Day which will be commemorated under the theme “Strategies and Mechanisms for the Transparent Management of Covid-19 Funds”. In recognition of the vast progress that has been made and cognizant of the need to continually reflect on approaches to end corruption, the African Union designated 11 July as the African Anti-Corruption Day. The African Union Advisory Board on Corruption will lead African Anti-Corruption Day events convened under the theme “Strategies and Mechanisms for the Transparent Management of Covid-19 Funds”. The 2018-2022 Strategic Plan of the African Union Advisory Board on Corruption (AUABC) is a framework that provides guidance for the initiatives of the Board Members and the Secretariat towards the achievement of the Board's Short Term vision.

The Civil Society are to be fully engaged in the fight against corruption and related offences and the popularization of this Convention with the full participation The Board engages Member States to ascertain the status of implementation of the Convention and the measures taken to prevent and combat corruption. Several other Member States have appended their signatures. Majority of the Member States have ratified and are State Parties to the Convention.

The Member States of the African Union adopted the African Union Convention on Preventing and Combating Corruption (The Convention) at the Second Ordinary Session of the Assembly of the Union, held in Maputo (Mozambique), on 11th July 2003.
